VAE emulsion presents significant advantages over solvent-based adhesives, primarily in environmental and safety aspects. As water-based formulations, VAE emulsions reduce VOC emissions by up to 90%, aligning with global low-carbon regulations like EU’s REACH and China’s GB 30981. Solvent-based adhesives, conversely, release harmful volatile compounds, posing health risks and requiring special handling. VAE emulsion’s non-flammability and low toxicity make it safer for industrial use and indoor applications. In terms of performance, VAE emulsion matches solvent-based adhesives in adhesion to many substrates while offering better flexibility. For instance, in automotive interior bonding, VAE emulsion bonds plastic trims with shear strength ≥1.5 MPa, comparable to solvent-based alternatives but without hazardous emissions. Additionally, VAE emulsion cures faster in some cases, reducing production downtime, and its water solubility allows easy cleanup, unlike solvent-based adhesives that require chemical thinners.
